Aquatics/Water Safety

The American Red Cross has the best training on how to be safe in, on, and around water. Each year, we train more than 8,000 people how to swim and swim better. Red Cross first established water safety training in the early 1900s, setting the standards for quality training for swim and lifeguard instructors. We also teach a variety of community courses such as basic water rescue and CPR for the professional rescuer. Whether you want to become a lifeguard for a local pool, teach others how to swim or just create a safe environment at the beach or your own backyard pool, we can give you the training you need.

Learn to Swim

Our “Learn-to-Swim” courses for children and adults will provide participants with the basic skills to be safe in and around the water. Contact your local community pool statewide to sign up for Red Cross swim courses. Annually, Red Cross sponsors free summer swim classes for adults and keikis at Ala Moana Beach Park, on Oahu, and at various spots on all major islands (see Summer Swim and Summer Buddies option on the left).

Sponsored Red Cross training can be found state-wide at authorized providers and county aquatic facilities

Lifeguard (LG)

If you're 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, one that will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start. Through classroom learning and hands-on practice, you'll learn:

Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries

  • Rescue skills - in the water and on land
  • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR - to help you prepare for any emergency
  • Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

If you are at least 16-years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children or adults refine their strokes, or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Qualified WSIs can also help prepare swim coaches to prevent and respond to emergency situations.

Contact your local Red Cross branch office for details to where and when you can sign up for aquatics courses.
